Pyramid for Life

Blank Block

Family:  A group of people who are generally not blood relations but who share common attitudes, interests, love each other and or have the same goals, and frequently live together.  I thought this fit perfect for our team because this is what our Way To Win family was like. None of us were related but we all had goals together as a team. We wanted to be great in our own personal way and everyone was there to have each other's back. We are each other's support. We all have a ton of common interests and basketball is only one of so many! And the end is great, "frequently live together", we do travel a lot together and stay together and share beds, food, laughs, cries, clothes, everything. But my favorite part of family is that we all love one another. You could take out every other part of the meaning for family and love is all that you would need. When you love each other all things are possible. Love is the biggest part in a family, you have to love each other in order for things to happen, to communicate, to succeed.

Balance: A state of equilibrium or equipoise or an equal distribution of weight or amount etc.

I believe that balance is an important word and has many different meanings based on the lifestyle you live. For me it means to have a fair balance between my basketball life and my life with my friends and family. A balance of study time and a balance of free time is also something that is important to me. Without balance in my life, I think there would be a lot that I was missing out on. Coach Berry did a really good job this summer with balance. It’s easy with as many games as we play and as much time we spend together to overdose and get worn out on basketball and with our teammates. She did a great job of balancing everything. You can’t spend too much time on one thing otherwise your body gets worn down physically and mentally. It is a much healthier lifestyle to live when your life is balanced.

Values: A principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable
Values are essential to success in life. They guide people's decisions and lead them down the right path. Values are what drive people. Without values a person is more likely to conform to others because they do not have their own set of standards to follow. People's values is what makes them who they are. I know my values are at the center of my decision making and contribute to who I am.

Determination: To set a goal and push through all obstacles that confront you in order to reach that goal.
Determination effects my life because without it you wouldn't be able to push through the obstacles life throws at you. Determination is what pushes you to succeed.

Integrity: Doing the right thing, rather than what is expedient; soundness of moral character; honesty. A person with integrity is trustworthy, responsible, respected, and has an unshakable character. "He always stood by his convictions, even when they were unpopular."
Integrity has been the toughest thing for me to do in my life. It is the character trait that is missing most in me. But my goal is to gain integrity as my life continues.

Failure:  An omission of occurrence or performance, failing to perform a duty or expected action.
I except failure into my life because I know that when I fail it only expands my horizon at the things I can accomplish. Failing in a sport makes you aware to never make the same mistake again. Failing in a classroom teaches you a lesson and will only make you a stronger individual. Failure is something that everyone needs to except into their life. I think of failing as a stepping stone to my destination. In life there are always set backs, and obstacles, there will never be a clear path. In basketball failure needs to be excepted. If nobody is perfect then mistakes are ok, but not learning from them isn't. I am where I am today because I used failure in my life as a tool, I have failed many times on and off the court, but my mistakes have made me into a better person and a stronger individual. I choose to dream big and with that I plan on failing a lot, but I know the outcome will be worth all those times I failed. "Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes." - John Dewey
Shelby Wahlberg, Kentwood HS
Perseverance: A persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. (dictionary)
"Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph. A beginning, a struggle and a victory." (gandhi) Perseverance is what pushes you throught the obstacles of the struggle and towards the victory.
 Jessie Genger, Kentwood HS

Confidence: A full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing: belief in oneself and one's powers or abilities; self-confidence; self-reliance.
Confidence is believing in yourself and the others around. Having the right mindset and believing you can do anything. Confidence comes from preparation and what you think about during the day. Where we put our attention has an affect on our lives. Confidence goes up and down and it is our job to stay disciplined and confident in our abilities, because confidence isn’t taken away it’s given away.
Shelby Lyman, Archbishop Murphy HS
Composure: A calm or tranquil state of mind; self-possession.
I try to have composure a lot. I like to hide how I'm feeling when I feel its necessary. I don't wear my emotions on my sleeve. I use composure with everything pretty much.
Lindsey Moore, Kentwood HS
